Mari Lwyd Statue

The Mari Lwyd (Welsh for “Gray Mare”) is a traditional Welsh custom, typically associated with the New Year and Christmas. It involves a group of people who dress up in a horse-like figure made from a decorated, often skeletal, horse’s head mounted on a pole, with the body concealed under a sheet or cloak. 
The group, known as Mari Lwyd procession, goes door-to-door, where they engage in a form of ritualized battle or contest of wits, often involving singing, rhymed challenges, and wordplay. The residents of the house are expected to offer hospitality or prizes, and the Mari Lwyd’s success in the verbal exchange often leads to the group being invited inside for celebration. 
The tradition has ancient roots, possibly linked to pre-Christian winter festivals.
